Something about stories brings us closer to one another, and they can also bring us closer to the sacred. In this Voices of St Agnes gathering, we explore the ancient art of oral storytelling, where the storyteller and listeners alike are transported into another world woven into being by voice, body, narrative, and the Spirit.
Dana Sherry, coordinator for the ISLC and also a professional storyteller, will share three of her favorite stories of the saints, and to reflect together on how connecting with their lives can help us to see God in our own experiences.

Dance Generators, an intergenerational dance company housed at the University of San Francisco, has been exploring the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and other spiritual ideologies through dance. As an interfaith group of diverse cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds, they've been wondering if a thread of the unseen is one tool to address binary divisions and are curious to animate the voice of spirit in familiar spaces in new ways. What is the value and resource of spirituality to bind us together across differences? What are you called to respond to?
The group will be sharing some of their reflections in the form of a dance performance and community ritual with sound design by Miles Lassi in St Ignatius Church on May 9th & 10th at 7:30pm. Cultivating Hope in Troubling Times: A Queer Latinx Perspective, with Prof. Ish Ruiz

What does hope look like today? How do we find light in dark and difficult times, including adverse political times and times of transition? One possible answer is to reclaim our traditions! This presentation will explore how we can find refuge in our queer and Latinx Christian traditions to craft a message of hope. The facilitator will interweave personal narrative, theological insight, and practical advice for how people and communities can navigate difficulty and grow together in communion with God. This journey often involves introspection, discernment, and external public activism.
Dr. Ish Ruiz teaches Latinx and Queer Decolonial Theology at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA, and holds a PhD in Theology and Ethics from the Graduate Theological Union. A native from Puerto Rico and a queer Catholic theologian, his research interests explore the intersection between queer theology, Latinx theology, ecclesiology, sexual ethics, liberation, human rights, and Catholic education. Through his teaching, research, and service, Dr. Ruiz hopes to see a world where Catholicism (and Christianity, more broadly) embrace the diversity of gifts people of all racial backgrounds and sexual identities bring to society and the Church.
